Short background history

The Italian Hospital of Amman was established in the year 1926 by the Italian surgeon Dr. Fausto Tesio, who came to the then Trans- Jordan Emirate to set up not only the first hospital in the Country but the first organized Christian Charity as well.

The hospital belongs to a charitable Association ( A.N.S.M.I.) with headquarters in Rome- Italy, and is entrusted to the Comboni Missionary Sisters, an International Religious Congregation, dedicated to serve voluntarily and generously to the most needy people of this Country and in many others in the world.

The Italian Hospital is a General, 60 beds Hospital, located in the heart of the old City of Amman. The hospital is surrounded by densely populated areas from which the poor inhabitants, immigrants and refugees come for treatment.

Since its early beginnings, the hospital has always extended a passionately helping hand, to all kinds of needy people and refugees, ( Palestinians, Iraqi, and also African and Asian migrant workers). Besides, it has always assisted mothers and babies in need, terminally sick patients, and those who for various reasons, where unable to find medical admission or help elsewhere …

The hospital, has a long history of collaboration with other charities in Amman, such as the Pontifical Mission, Caritas and the UNHCR. At present, with the high influx of Iraqi refugees,( approx. one million in Jordan), is playing a major role too with their medical projects for them, both as in-patients and out-patients.
