Mission Statement
Health facilities and medical services for diagnosing and treating breast cancer in Iraq are inadequate or non-existent. In collaboration with its partners, the BCSI is committed to supporting the improvement of health care facilities and services to meet the needs of the population by providing access to the most advanced scientific research, pharmaceuticals, and equipment to diagnose and treat cancer patients in Iraq.
Over and above the failing health infrastructure, Iraqi women also face serious social and cultural constraints to their capability to cope with the demands of this potentially fatal disease. These include lack of access to nutritious foods; the prevailing poverty; fear of ostracism and of the social stigma that cancer may bring to one’s self or one’s family, and the irrational fear of contagion. These are compounded by legal factors: women, in general, are unable to seek treatment without spousal permission. Last but not least is the general absence of reliable and easily accessible information in Kurdish or Arabic on breast cancer options.
Despite these challenges and constraints, the BCSI recognizes the intellectual capital of Iraq and its international governmental and non-governmental partners, and is devoted to bringing these resources to bear to improve the situation for all Iraqis. In addition to leveraging the network of well-educated doctors and health care professionals and the educational infrastructure to train new professionals, BCSI is planning a number of campaigns to provide for improved access to current cancer diagnostic methods, research, and treatments.
BCSI Mission Objectives:
- Create an organization to be headquartered in Iraq with an ancillary office in Washington D.C. to design and execute effective, efficient and organized programs to improve the lives and expand the options of breast cancer patients;
- Organize fundraising campaigns to make resources available for short- and long-term heath care investments;
- Coordinate the donation of modern medical equipment and exchange programs;
- Conduct a comprehensive survey of awareness levels and attitudes, treatment options, and health conditions to identify the most immediate needs;
- Implement targeted public service campaigns to raise awareness regarding the scourge of breast cancer among key stakeholder communities throughout Iraq;
- Spread awareness of the danger of breast cancer, and provide practical knowledge about the techniques and benefits of self examination;
- Serve as an information clearinghouse for breast cancer patients and their families, treatment facilities, and health care professionals;
- Institutionalize the achievements of these objectives to guarantee the continuation of the mission in meeting the urgent needs of the Iraqi women.
The first step toward achieving these objectives is recognizing the problem: the needs of breast cancer victims in Iraq have never been greater. The BCSI and its partner organizations are working to address the challenges posed by Iraq’s current situation. To continue to do so, we will need your support. With your help, real progress can be made. Let’s get started.
